Vegetation & Debris Management Assistance

Helping Reduce Wildfire Risk in Our Mountain Communities

Living in the mountain communities along the Highway 38 corridor means living among the forests, trees, and natural beauty that make our region unique.

It also means living with wildfire risk.

One of the most effective ways residents can help reduce that risk is through the ongoing management of vegetation and natural debris around homes and structures.

FireSafe 38 is committed to helping residents stay informed about vegetation and debris management practices that can help reduce wildfire risk while preserving the forest character of our mountain communities.

What Is Vegetation & Debris Management?

Vegetation and debris management involves reducing the buildup of combustible materials that can contribute to wildfire spread around homes, structures, and access routes.

In our mountain communities, wildfire fuels are not limited to brush and trees.

Pine needles, pinecones, leaves, fallen branches, dead vegetation, and other natural debris accumulate throughout the year and can increase wildfire risk when left unmanaged.

Vegetation and debris management may include:

• Removing excessive accumulations of pine needles and leaves

• Clearing roofs, gutters, decks, and other areas where debris collects

• Removing dead vegetation and fallen branches

• Reducing ladder fuels that can carry fire from the ground into trees

• Selective pruning of trees and shrubs

• Improving spacing between vegetation

• Maintaining defensible space around structures

• Keeping driveways and access routes accessible

Preserving What Makes Our Communities Special

The goal is not to clear the forest.

The goal is strategic spacing, selective pruning, fuel reduction, and ongoing maintenance that help reduce wildfire risk while maintaining the natural beauty and forest character residents value.

Every property is different. Wildfire preparedness often involves balancing safety, environmental considerations, accessibility, and personal preferences.
